What You Need to Start Wakesurfing?

You’ll need to be well-prepared before going out onto the water. All wake surfing gear is important for the safety and thrill of your boat. Here’s what you’ll need to wake surf:

Wakesurf Board

Look for an appropriate wake surfboard for your first experience.

Wakesurf Rope

We suggest using a short rope with a large handle, easy to hold on to, made specifically for wake surfing.

Boat

A boat is required that will be strong enough to wake the board on the waves that come after the boat. They also have ballast systems to ensure the perfect wave to be surfed on.

Life Jacket

Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. It is important for safety, especially for first-time riders. They will give support if you fall into the water or buoyancy if you get wet.

With all of this gear in hand, you’re now ready to learn how to wake surf.

What to Wear While Wakesurfing

Comfort is most important when buying clothes. Here is what you should wear:

Swimwear

You have to feel secure and comfortable in your swimsuit. You will, after all, be swimming and swimming around, so it should fit snugly and not shift or slip as you move about in the water. Swimwear that’s too loose can catch on the board or rope.

Rash Guard or Wetsuit

For people who will probably spend more time in the water than on the board, a rash guard or wetsuit is a good idea. This will protect your skin against either the board or the rope. It’ll also add an extra layer of warmth if you surf in colder water when you wake surf.

Life Vest

A snug snug-fitting life vest may be the most important piece of equipment. Competition vests or impact vests allow for better mobility but a Coast Guard-approved vest for beginners would be added to increase safety and buoyancy. It should fit snugly, comfortably, but safely and also for mobility purposes for the learning time.

Choosing the Right Wakesurf Board for Beginners

This board can make or break your learning experience. Here is what to look for in a beginner-friendly wake surfboard:

Size and Shape

For starters, the best bet would be surf-style boards. These wake surfboards usually have the same larger surface area that provides you with more stability and ease. Your rounded edges make it easier to balance, and added buoyancy helps you float with greater stability.

Fin Setup

Tri-fin is the term given for a board or surfboard when it has three fins suitable for keeping the board stable and tracking straight. Excellent for beginners to get the feel and balance of the board.

Buoyancy

For a beginner, the board should be buoyant so that it keeps you quite high up in the water. This helps to stabilize and get back on the board. Once you have enough experience, you will look for more agility and will be looking to move to the more agile, responsive boards.

Construction

Entry-level surfboards are built from harder materials that can withstand impacts, not like the surfers at higher riding levels. The board is designed for beginners who most probably will fall a few times.

Driving a Wakesurf Boat

Surfing on a boat begins with learning how to drive a wake surfing boat correctly. Although boat setup is crucial to creating that perfect wave, here’s how to drive for wake surfing:

  1. At first, as you pull someone up, don’t yank on a rider from the water you may cause bails and falls. Take up the wake surfer slowly with a three-step launch to their feet.
  2. Slowly crank up the gear of the boat to tighten in the wake surf rope, letting the rider find space.
  3. Slowly start gaining momentum till the board pops up under your feet. Once you get a good balance, you can increase to 10-12 mph speed, which should be close to the normal wake surfing speed.
  4. To get the perfect wake, you would want the weight of the boat evenly distributed or maybe a little on the side where you want to surf. It would then create the ultimate wave. Step-by-Step Guide to Standing Up on a Wakesurf Board

Probably the most challenging aspect for first-timers is getting on the wakesurf board itself, but the more one tries it, the easier it becomes. You start in the water with your heels off the end of the board, toes up. Your knees bend with tension in the rope pulling you back towards the boat. Don’t pull yourself up with your arms while the boat lifts you. Let the wake surf boat naturally pull you up, keeping your weight centered. When the boat is pulling you upwards, bend your knees and center your weight. Push down on your heels while slowly getting onto your feet as the board flips under your feet and still keep your knees bent to stable.

Avoid common mistakes such as pushing too hard against the board or even attempting to pull yourself up with your arms and thus falling. Relax, let the boat do its thing, and trust the process! If you want a thrilling wake surfing adventure then you have SURF TCI!

Tips to Progress Faster in Wakesurfing

Once stable on the wave, you’re ready to let go of the wakesurf rope and surf without support. Once you feel you are comfortable on the board and are riding through the wave, loosen your knees and stand up. You will want to relax and have your weight in the middle. You want to be “in the pocket” or the sweet spot of the wave. The wave will push you forward, and you will not need to use the rope anymore. Once you feel that wave is pushing you continuously, you can slowly drop the tension in the rope and let it go. You can toss the rope back to the boat or across the wave so it doesn’t get dragged under the board.

Controlling Speed and Staying on the Wave

This is one of the most important skills for beginners: learning how to control your speed and stay in the wave. Your front foot acts as your accelerator. When you pick up the pace, you will have to shift more weight onto that front foot, whereas to slow it down, you will need to shift it to your back foot. Everything is all about that balance between both.

Once inside the pocket of a wave, it just lets you ride. It is only the riding energy of the wave that will take you forward. If you get blown out or you are overtaken by the wave then, drop into the wave and push your heels in to maintain speed while at the same time helping you catch up to the wave.

The first error the newbies make is panicking whenever they feel that they are going to lose the wave. Rather than pulling back, lean into the wave, drop, and then re-enter on speed from the pocket.
